This very straight-forward remix of Factory Floor’s ‘How you say’ comes from Hamburg’s Golden Pudel resident DJ Helena Hauff. Helena puts the (hardly recognizable) original into a melodic electro framework that makes use of an exceedingly catchy synth melody. She uses small parts from Factory Floor’s version and develops these into warmer and fuller components of her own remix, that delivers powerful tunes where the original remains a little faint.
This track only represents a tiny part of her eclectic repertoire that fuses new wave, acid techno, electro and other genres into a remarkable experience in her full sets. And she’s not only touring on her own, but also joined the reboot of long-standing electro-impro project Hypnobeat at the end of last year. Another project definitely worth checking out
Among other dates, Helena will play a set at Robert Johnson in Offenbach (/Frankfurt) for the 4th anniversary of the Tactile Record Store on the 1st of November. So be sure not to miss out on that, if you happen to find yourself anywhere close by.

Electric Women is reporting back from a short (work-related) break with an incredibly intimate remix by Shura. The London-based producer and singer does some rearranging and tweaking on ‘Say You Love Me’ by Britain’s electro-soul darling Jessie Ware.
The result is this four minute beauty, which is dominated by a moan-like synth line and slowly progresses from having a soothing quality towards an upbeat and uplifting ending. It leaves one with the simple directive, expressed by a masculine-sounding distorted voice, to ‘Fall in Love’ – thereby excitingly contrasting Jessie Ware’s repeated statement: ‘I don’t wanna fall in love’.

I’m really happy to introduce • dot • today. She is a producer and singer from LA, who has founded her own all-female(!) record label ‘Unspeakable Records’. And because this most definitely deserves its very own lengthy article, I’ll leave it at that for now.
‘Super Moon’ is taken from the first compilation released through her record label, ‘Unspeakable Volume One’. The sampler is available as a download or as limited edition on cassette via their bandcamp.
It is a super chilled tune, built from some superb drum samples and a futuristic line of vocal samples and synths. I don’t think I’m going to relax to anything else in the next days.
‘Space Race’ is my other Dot favorite, with which I might have fallen deeply in love.
It has some unbelievable gamey samples and some pleasantly wobbling and progressive synth sequences. The combination with her assertively whispered vocals (‘Are you ready? Go!’) through out the track just gives me the chills. Definitely one of this year’s favorites.

This Minimal House stunner is a remix of Mari Kvien Brunvoll’s ‘Everywhere You Go’ by Ricardo Villalobos . Mari is a Norwegian Jazz singer who comes from a very musical family. Her performances are inspired by the sound of pop and folk, and while on stage she uses a variety of acoustic as well as electronic instruments. So it’s only fitting that Ricardo put her wonderful voice to some very enchanting electronic beats.
It’s a bit disappointing though that there are only very limited resources with infos about Mari. At least I learned, that there still are people that use MySpace. Astonishing. But when it comes the music itself – it is “nothing less than magic”.

DJ and producer Rosa Lux (Rosali Batzer) is one of Denmark’s more famous representatives in the electro scene, having even made a name for herself in broader Danish society due to a few appearances on danish TV programs in the last years after her first successful single. Her debut album ‘Monsters’ already came out in 2011 and she continued to be a regular among Copenhagen and Europe’s night clubs.
‘Wilderness’ is a collaboration with artists from Germany, namely Audiolith producer Rampue and electropop duo ‘I’m Not A Band‘. Together they produced a wonderfully relaxing Tech-House track that simply clings to your eardrums. It’s a testament of how well-deserved Rosa’s fame in the Copenhagen club scene really is, even when she’s only providing vocals here. For a proof of her beat-making qualities, listen to the gold-awarded ‘Min Klub Først’ feat. Alberte & Josefine Winding.

Hailing from San Francisco, Holly Herndon is currently studying for a doctor in computer music at Stanford University, all the while touring with her music and sound art. Her musical self was shaped in the dance and techno scene of Berlin in the late 90s, where she stayed for several years after moving away from her home in Tennessee. Since then she moved back to the US and has been highly active in the art and electronic music scene.
The Berlin influence is still recognizable in the accentuated techno style of a lot of the beats she produces. A combination with sometimes ethereal and eerie vocal parts defines her very own sound. These vocals and her tendency to experiment partly resemble Fever Ray/The Knife‘s approach to music. In case an archetypal example for Holly’s diverse style even exists, it’s ‘Fade’. It’s dark and it’s danceable!

I was planning to focus on less vocal-heavy electronic sounds for a while already, so I’m glad to have come across this little beauty of a remix by Kate Simko. It puts a slightly different electronic spin on the original by Philip Glass while keeping the faintly oppressive but melodic atmospheric elements.
Kate Simko started working as a producer and composer in Chicago around the change of the millenium, which also explains her strong influences from Chicago House. Besides this and Detroit Techno classical music and jazz are by far the genres with the greatest impact impact on her mostly warm and soulful electronic sound. Her own background in music theory and piano also influenced the currently London-based artists latest project: the London Electronic Orchestra, where she merges live orchestra and electronic sounds to create something entirely new and incredibly wonderful, as can be seen below.

Sometimes I love remixes just for the sake of making me rediscover a long forgotten gem. At other times they bring songs onto a whole new level. And there are also those few tracks where both coincide in one tune.
The MK remix of Emma Louise’s cooperation with german producer Wankelmut is one of those exceptions. It’s a much more progressive, sweeping house beat set to Emma’s vocals and the melodic sequences of the original. And although this seems to be quite a controversial remix, judging by the comments on Soundcloud, I like it way better than MK’s original take on the song. Even though I must admit that I share the reservations about the general quality of production and some parts of the song, this has too much style to dismiss it that easily.
Emma herself is a talented singer-songwriter from Australia, who had her first greater commercial success with the feature of Wankelmut. The original version (‘Jungle’) of this tune already is a wonderful song and in 2013 she released her first full album ‘Vs Head Vs Heart’ that was positively received by the critics. I’d love for her to work together with more electronic producers in the future. It would really suit her.

Laurel doesn’t only share a childhood idol with me (Britney Spears), later on she also fell in love with Laura Marling. And if that wouldn’t already be enough to make me like her an inappropriate lot, she is also an incredible singer-songwriter. The 19-year-old girl from London released her impressive debut EP ‘To the Hills’ in April of this year.
All the while electronic remixes of her songs are making the round on the blogosphere. And although the Live City Remix gets a whole lotta’ love right now, my favorite version of Laurel’s beautiful ‘Shells’ is this deep house variant that has been retouched by Hannes Fischer. I can’t stop playing this 7 1/2 minute beauty… Except for listening to Laura Marling, of course.

Inga Copeland’s lack of creating a coherent or even recognizable media image for herself during her membership of ‘Hype Williams’ is yet another slightly experimental and unorthodox aspect of the female producer and songstress. This self-uploaded ‘video’ of her playing one track of the self-released ‘Smitten’ EP’s 7″ fits right in to that picture.
And what a song it is. Thumping beats, simple melancholic synths and Inga’s voice that sounds like she’s a bit resentful but above all, full of pity for whoever she is singing that song to. The Smitten ‘EP’ was made available only a few weeks before the release of her debut album ‘Because I’m worth it’, that is also full of highly recommended, albeit sometimes hard to digest tunes.
