With all the electro-R&B tracks I posted lately, there is someone who shouldn’t be missing from the list and that’s Jillian Banks, or just Banks. Banks is a singer-songwriter from Los Angeles and has become all the hype over the last year with not much more than her SoundCloud page to show for her at first, being reluctant to make much use of social networks.
One of her trademarks is working together with great electronic producers (e.g. Kaytranada, SOHN and TEED). Brain was created in collaboration with one of the best producers of experimental electronic sounds in recent years, fellow Los Angeles citizen Shlohmo. I don’t think it’s the best track by either one of them but it still is a combination not to miss out on. So if you haven’t listened to the song, yet – change that.

This is one of the most intense tunes I’ve heard all year and it’s brought to us by Kelela (Mizanekristos), a songstress from LA, in cooperation with producers Gifted & Blessed. Kelela is one of alt-R&B’s brightest future prospects. She was born in Washington and has an Ethiopian heritage. It was only when she started studying Jazz, that she started to pursue a career as a singer.
Her biggest impact on the electronic soundscape as of yet was the release of her mixtape ‘Cut 4 Me’, that she described as the first time she could actually express exactly what she wanted to, with the help of a diverse array of producers. They produced the raw beats before Kelela added her own vocals afterwards, aiming for the sound and feel of a remix album. And to some success indeed as, among others, The Guardian praised it as one of 2013’s best albums. And I wouldn’t be surprised if ‘The High’ would end up on quite a few years-end top lists as well.

It already means exciting times, when TOKiMONSTA is about to release a new (mini-)album in the coming months. Nonetheless, she still managed to exceed my expectations. ‘Realla’, that features some beautifully soulful R&B vocals by Anderson Paak, totally blew my mind.
TOKi’s production together with Anderson’s vocals make this tune something uniquely enjoyable. It just oozes sexiness through all of its chords and verses. TOKi is definitely among my favorite female producers right now, aiming for the top spot with this sublime tune.
TOKiMONSTA was already featured briefly on Electric Women and with her upcoming album ‘Desiderium’ that is bound to be released on the 23rd of September, it can be said with some certainty, that this won’t be the last we’ve seen (and heard!) of her here.

It’s almost a periodical event, that a new electro artist who is discovered in the depths of the internet, gets hyped out of proportions in the following months. But there are those rare instances, where most of the fuss is well deserved. The release of FKA Twigs’ first full-length album ‘LP1’ is one of those events where I will happily join the overly enthusiastic crowd. Not only because it’s one of this year’s best and most captivating electronic albums, as of yet. But also because of FKA Twigs herself, who surely deserves all the praise she gets lately.

Just a very short post today, as this tune is still fresh and definitely doesn’t deserve to get overlooked, but there’s only so much time in a day. It’s Bearcubs remix of ‘No Other Way’ by the wonderful Sinead Harnett.
Sinead is a london-based singer of irish-thai descent, that incorporates electronic elements into every one of her songs, that are otherwise soaking with Soul and R&B classiness. She released her debut single ‘Got Me’ only a little more than a year ago and already featured, very successfully, on some Disclosure songs before that.

There is a special something about US-singer Alina Baraz that makes me return to her so often. She has a very calming timbre which suits the beats of Danish producer Galimatias perfectly, who worked with her on a lot of her songs, including ‘Drift’, in a collaborative effort.
They also just announced a new track with the name of ‘Urban Flora’, that is due to be released anytime soon. Good times!
