Melanie Martinez – Dollhouse (Treasure Fingers Remix) / Toxic (Cestladore Rework) [Double Feature]

Today’s Electric Women took a path that becomes a more and more common phenomenon in the modern music industry, but which (thankfully) is still a rarity in electronic music. 20-year old Melanie Martinez’ first dip into fame and appearance in popular media was her participation in the third season of American TV-Show ‘The Voice’. She was eliminated after reaching the Top 6, but still managed to build upon her newly found popularity.

Treasure Fingers just released a remix of the lead single ‘Dollhouse’ from her debut EP with the same name. In his hands it has become a fine house / garage song that perfectly compliments Melanie’s vocals.

One of my favorites releases from last year has taken one of her most memorable performances on The Voice, the cover of Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’ as a base. The rework by Cestladore, which he simply calls ‘Melanie’, puts a whole different spin on that song again. It’s one of the best trap tunes I’ve heard yet. So good that it really might be post-trap already, like Cestladore himself tagged it on Soundcloud.

It seems like Melanie Martinez is becoming a producers’ favorite to remix and it’s definitely worth the effort, if one takes these two tunes as any kind of benchmark for it.

Disclosure ft. Jessie Ware – Confess to Me (Hannah Wants & Chris Lorenzo RMX)

This extract from one of Hannah Wants sets that has been released in may brings together two great women of the contemporary electronic music scene. At first Hannah Wants herself. She is one of UK’s leading deep / bass house DJs hailing from Birmingham and has been around for a few years already. It is her who remixed this already modern classic from Disclosure’s album ‘Settle’, together with her congenial partner in production Chris Lorenzo.

The genre-bending singer-songwriter Jessie Ware is the second women involved in ‘Confess to me’. She is the original collaborator of Disclosure on this fabulous tune and provides the powerful vocals. Jessie was born and raised in London and is already on the verge of releasing her second full album in October of this year.

This ingenious combination of four incredibly talented artists into one powerful club-tune is definitely a keeper, that shouldn’t be missed on anyone’s house-playlist.

TOKiMONSTA – Steal my Attention

After dropping the incredibly great ‘Realla’ a few weeks ago, ‘Steal my Attention’ is the next song from TOKiMONSTA’s upcoming mini-album ‘Desiderium‘ that got released via her Soundcloud. Desiderium is bound to be released in the end of September and ‘Steal my attention’ surely sweetens the wait until then.

In the wake of all the attention for TOKi, I’ve revisited her debut album Midnight Menu, as well as the Creature Dreams EP, and was astonished because I forgot how developed she already sounded. And although her newest tracks and the old ones could both be categorized under the umbrella term future-beats, there’s a very distinct difference between TOKi today and from back then. The reason could be something, that she stresses in her interviews. That, as a producer, you should not try to copy someone else, but find your own sound. Maybe she just changed and her sound developed with her. What’s exciting is that TOKi did and still does sound great. I’m looking forward to what comes next with her.

Fei-Fei – Little White Lies

Fei-Fei is a producer and DJ from Los Angeles with roots in the techno and trance scene. She started her musical career as a classical piano player before immersing herself in the EDM scene. After moving to Los Angeles she quickly became one of the cities most prominent DJs and has since continued to put in top-notch performances, as well as put out fabulous tracks and remixes she produced herself.

‘Little White Lies’ is Fei-Fei’s newest tune. It is a testament to her recent change in sound, deviating from the ravey techno and hard trance music she produced before. Fei-Fei’s stylish tracks today are strongly influenced by the acoustics of the future-garage genre, with prominent synthesizers and an overall more soulful sound.

Alina Baraz – Drift

There is a special something about US-singer Alina Baraz that makes me return to her so often. She has a very calming timbre which suits the beats of Danish producer Galimatias perfectly, who worked with her on a lot of her songs, including ‘Drift’, in a collaborative effort.

They also just announced a new track with the name of ‘Urban Flora’, that is due to be released anytime soon. Good times!
