Impelling Drums, ethereal surf music vocals, synthetic circus sounds and surreal lyrics. The combination of all that is what makes the multi-piece cold-wave, punk-rock, yé-yé band ‘La Femme’ so special. Continue reading La Femme
I just really wanted to post something by the amazing TOKiMONSTA and decided on this bonus track from her 2011 EP ‘Creature Dreams Japan’. Toki is also one of the unfortunately still relatively rare female electronic producers that regularly produces top of the notch remixes (like this one of Hundred Waters’ ‘Thistle’). Her latest album is 2013’s ‘Half Shadows’.
She is signed to Flying Lotus‘ Brainfeeder Records and her style is slightly reminiscent of his very relaxed beats as well. She was born and raised in Los Angeles, brought up with an education in classical music, studied business, worked in the video game industry and in advertising and is now considered one of LA’s top DJs.
The video to Austra’s long awaited ‘Habitat’ EP is out and it picks up where Austra’s soundscapes left off. It tells the very intimate story of emotional and sexual need, desire and longing between couples of every variety.
An alternative link for the Habitat video for everyone coming from Germany.
Singer-Songwriter Becky Hill became prominent through UK’s ‘The Voice’ where she reached the semi-finals. Afterwards she collaborated with David Guetta and Paolo Nutini among others, before she had her breakthrough with the original Deep House version of ‘Gecko (Overdrive)’. Today is going to be a classy day. With this #1 disco bomb from Minneapolis-based studio band Lipps. Inc, that was released on their album ‘Mouth to Mouth’ in 1979. It is sung by Cynthia Johnson, who still works as a singer, songwriter and producer (as well as sometimes as an actress) and has released her first solo album in 2013.
This song is sure to bring out your Friday evening gott humör, in no time. Although the video is noteworthy as well, as the only black woman (the mandatory funk extra) in that video is degraded to a background role, in contrast to Lipps inc. itself, which was an ethnically diverse formation with said Cynthia Johnson as a black lead singer. Can I hear anyone say whitewashing? Continue reading Lipps Inc. – Funkytown
Anna Lunoe has her hands in a lot of stuff these days. She creates runway music for the likes of Prada and Louis Vuitton, acts as a radio show host for an australian guerilla programme and is also the first woman to mix for Ministry of Sound Australia.
This 10 month old house tune is a blog favorite and really adds, how they call it on her own website, ‘a feminine edge to club music’ at the same time without falling into stereotypical contribution of women, as she not only provides the vocals but also does all producing herself. Highly recommended. Continue reading Anna Lunoe – Breathe
To celebrate Robyn and Röyksopp’s collaborative mini-album ‘Do it Again’ (that is sure to get its very own post anytime soon) and their recent gig at Jimmy Kimmel, I want to post another classic by the other half of them, after posting one of Röyksopp’s classic a few days ago.
I give you Robyn and her all-Swedish feature with producer (Andreas) Kleerup ‘With every heartbeat’. It’s so catchy and one of the best songs Robyn has put out, which actually says a lot. Continue reading Robyn ft. Kleerup – With Every Heartbeat
